Best & Worst of MAC Boom, Boom, Bloom Collection

Now that I’ve finished reviewing all of the products I had on deck to review from the newly-released MAC Boom, Boom, Bloom Collection, here’s a look at how well (or poorly) the products did. It came as no surprise that the lipsticks performed the best, while the eyeshadow palette was more ho-hum. I think the texture of the High-Light Powders was particularly lovely, but they’re marketed so wrong that they make it painfully clear what so many readers loathe oversprays!

Anastasia Riviera Palette Review & Swatches

Riviera

Anastasia Riviera Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00 for 0.28 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that features several pops of colors with warmer-toned neutrals. There are 14 shades, of which six are shimmers, seven are mattes, and one is a satin in finish. The quality of most shades was good: pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing without any being particularly fussy to work with. The richer metallics feel more loosely pressed, so they can be easy to pick up too much product on a dry brush and tend to apply best (with the least fallout and most instant opacity) with a wet brush or fingertip. A few of the mattes were more powdery in their respective pan but applied well with minimal fallout.

Worth noting, three shades are Pressed Pigments are “not intended for use around the immediate eye area,” and they are: Bahamas, Cannes, and Palm (the latter was a surprise, as typically this warning accompanies brighter reds, pinks, and purples… not browns). I didn’t notice any staining with Palm, but both Bahamas and Cannes stained significantly (still visible after my morning cleanse) both applied on bare skin as well as over primer (I tested staining over Smashbox 24HR).

Sails

Sails is a pale white with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a moderately powdery texture, which resulted in some fallout if I wasn’t careful. I preferred to apply this as one of the first shades if using it on my brow bone to avoid it turning other shades ashy. This shade lasted well for seven and a half hours on me before it started to fade.

Formula Overview

$12.00/0.06 oz. – $200.00 Per Ounce

Anastasia EyeshadowΒ is supposed to be a β€œfinely-milled, highly-pigmented” powder eyeshadow. There are several different finishes, and the performance can be better or worse depending on the finish, though it also ranges from shade to shade. On average, the formula is semi-opaque to opaque, lightly dusty to buttery, wears seven to nine hours, and is fairly blendable. The Metallic and Titanium finishes seem to be the best-performing to me, but there are some really standout mattes and shimmers as well. I have not tried the sparkle, satin, or velvet finishes as extensively as the other finishes, personally.

Mica, Dimethicone, Boron Nitride, Nylon-12, Zinc Stearate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Zinc Myristate, Glycerin, Silica, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Caprylyl Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Isopentyldiol, Lauroyl Lysine, Phenoxyethanol, Polysilicone-11, Tocopherol. Yacht

Yacht is a soft, golden bronze with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had rich color coverage with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that felt silky and had slight slip. The eyeshadow adhered well to bare skin and blended out with ease. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Seychelles

Seychelles is a light-medium, bluish-teal with subtle, cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single layer, which easily built up to full coverage with less than half a layer. The consistency was smooth, lightly creamy, and not too dense, so it was easy to pick up and to apply to my lid. It wore beautifully for eight and a half hours on me before it creased faintly.

Palermo

Palermo is a bright, medium plum with warm undertones and cooler, violet shimmer and micro-sparkle. It had good color coverage but needed a second layer (or to be applied with a dampened brush) for full opacity. The consistency was drier to the touch and had slight fallout during application, though the edges were blendable and the color went on fairly evenly from the start. It lasted well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Seaside

Seaside is a pale, silvery lavender with cool undertones and warmer, golden sparkle and shimmer. It had opaque pigmentation paired with a slightly more loosely-pressed texture, which resulted in some fallout during application if I wasn’t careful to pat and press it into place (or use it with a dampened brush). I felt like this particularly shade seemed to lose some of its metallic finish within a few minutes of applying it, though. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before it started to crease.

Inheritance

Inheritance is a bright, sushine yeyllow gold with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. It had a loosely-pressed consistency that felt soft, dense with a bit of slip. It applied best with a patting/pressing motion, and it worked just fine with a dry brush, though a wet brush applied it more smoothly initially and brought out the shine in its finish. It had opaque pigmentation that wore nicely for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Mediterranean

Mediterranean is a light, faded blue with cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The pigmentation was semi-opaque and buildable, though nearly opaque when applied with a dampened brush or a fingertip. The consistency was chunkier but still with noticeable creaminess, which helped the product combine and adhere to my lid. If using a dry brush, I highly recommend using a gentle press and pull motion (hold the brush to the lid, press, and then gently pull/sweep in a fluid motion across the space you want it on) to apply with minimal fallout. It lasted well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Estate

Estate is a light-medium peach with strong, warm orange undertones and a satin finish. The ultra-fine shimmer became more noticeably when applied and blended out, as it produced a soft sheen. The texture was lightly powdery in the pan but blended out nicely and held most of its pigmentation when I did so. It stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Cabana

Cabana is a muted, mustard yellow with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had opaque color coverage with a soft, lightly powdery texture that had a bit of fallout during application but blended out beautifully. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Coastline

Coastline is a medium-dark peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that adhered evenly and blended out easily on my skin. The texture was moderately powdery in the pan, so I had to be sure to tap off excess and avoid very fluffy brushes (or else it kicked up enough powder to get into other pans!). It lasted nicely for seven and a half hours on me before I noticed fading.

Bahamas

Bahamas is a bright fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to opaque coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The texture was soft, thin without being too dry or difficult to apply, and lightly powdery in the pan. It blended out nicely and stayed on well for nine hours but did stain heavily and through the next day (I’d have to use concealer or wear full eye makeup to hide it), even when I tried it over primer.

Ingredients

Mica, Dimethicone, Boron Nitride, Nylon-12, Zinc Stearate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Zinc Myristate, Glycerin, Silica, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Caprylyl Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Isopentyldiol, Lauroyl Lysine, Phenoxyethanol, Polysilicone-11, Tocopherol. Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is a medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. There were very, very tiny golden shimmers strewn throughout but weren’t noticeable to my eye at all in person, so it looked like a matte finish in practice. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, soft, and blendable texture that was slightly powdery in the pan but not prone to fallout during application. It wore well eight hours on me before fading visibly.

Cannes

Cannes is a bright, medium purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a soft, lightly powdery texture but wasn’t prone to sheering out too readily and kept its richness on my lid, but it was a little thinner and seemed more prone to adhering to certain areas of my skin over others, which made blending more difficult. With enough effort, I was able to diffuse it fairly well, but it was easier to soften the edge with a shade like Bahamas or Monte Carlo on the edge. It lasted well for nine hours but left a faded, almost plum-hued stain on my lid that lingered into the next day (even after cleansing in the morning), even when I used it over primer.

Ingredients

Mica, Dimethicone, Boron Nitride, Nylon-12, Zinc Stearate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Zinc Myristate, Glycerin, Silica, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Caprylyl Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Isopentyldiol, Lauroyl Lysine, Phenoxyethanol, Polysilicone-11, Tocopherol. Palm

Palm is a deep, reddish-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too dense nor too loosely pressed in the pan. Though it was listed as a Pressed Pigment, I didn’t experience any staining with this one. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours on me before fading a bit.

NARS Arnera & Canoga Audacious Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches

Arnera

NARS Arnera Audacious Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a vibrant, deep pink-coral with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that covered my lips with smooth, even coverage, though there was a smidgen of product that sat in my deeper lip lines. The consistency seemed slightly thinner and more emollient than the average shade in the formula, so the end result didn’t seem as flattering on my lips as I’ve seen it be! The texture was still lightweight, creamy, and comfortable to apply and to wear, though. It stayed on well for five hours and was lightly hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

$34.00/0.14 oz. – $242.86 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have “one-stroke, full-coverage” pigmentation with a “soft matte finish” that is “long-lasting” and “hydrating.” The formula is best characterized by its texture: creamy, smooth, and slightly denser/thicker on (but not heavy) compared to the typical lipstick formula. Most of the shades are opaque, while “weak” shades are more semi-opaque. The majority of the colors I’ve tested have applied evenly and smoothly with good glide and feel comfortable on my lips. They tend to last between four and six hours and was lightly hydrating to non-drying. There was no noticeable scent or taste.

Canoga

NARS Canoga Audacious Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a bright, medium-dark orange-red with warm undertones and a glossy, cream finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly across my lips without tugging or dragging. The texture was lightweight, creamy without being too emollient, and dense enough to adhere for longer-wear but still be comfortable to wear over time. This shade lasted nicely for six hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

Anastasia Sunset Aura Loose Highlighter Review & Swatches

Sunset Aura

Anastasia Sunset Aura Loose Highlighter ($25.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a medium copper with warm undertones and a sparkling, golden sheen. It had buildable pigmentation from semi-sheer to opaque coverage, which was more dependent on how much product was dislodged from the sifter and picked up with a brush. It seemed more “flake-like” in texture where the particles seemed larger and/or clumped together (most visible in the close-up photo of the sifter holes), and this seemed to ensure that not that much product came out when sifted and minimized how much disappeared in the air when swirled onto a brush. The loose powder applied evenly to my skin and buffed out with little effort for a smooth, sparkling, and metallic sheen. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.21 oz. – $119.05 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to to have “more pearls, more sparkle and a higher reflect” than a typical pressed powder highlighter. It has “customizable levels of intensity” with a “smooth application” that can be used “alone” or “mix[ed] together.” The loose nature of the product definitely made it a more buildable product as coverage was very much dependent on how much product was put onto the brush. That amount often was related to how much product came through the sifter, which was a fair amount with the more finely-milled, less sparkly So Hollywood shade but much less with the more sparkly Snowflake and Sunset Aura shades.

All three shades applied evenly and blended out without much effort, and while sparkkly, they weren’t gritty or so glittery that the particles didn’t adhere well to my skin. The shades seemed to get to a more sparkling, metallic sheen faster than Anastasia’s powder highlighters have and had a bit of a wetter sheen overall. I felt that they were just shy of pore-emphasizing territory on my skin. They wore for eight hours on me on average.

ColourPop Just My Luck Eyeshadow Palette Swatches

ColourPop Just My Luck Eyeshadow Palette ($12.00) is a new, permanent all-green palette that joins the brand’s line-up of 9-pan palettes. There are four shimmers and five mattes within the palette, and I’d say three are very warm-toned, three are more neutral-to-warm, and three are cooler-toned. Here are swatches!

Anastasia Snowflake Loose Highlighter Review & Swatches

Snowflake

Anastasia Snowflake Loose Highlighter ($25.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a silvery white that seemed to run ever-so-slightly warm in tone or else just seemed warmer based on how it reflected light. It had a slightly translucent base with more fine shimmer and larger sparkles coming together to create a wet effect on my skin, and unless built up (or applied heavily), it had a more gradual application of product and sheen. I could see this working particularly well with an assortment of blushes and the like for an intense highlight without changing the base color too much.

The texture was fluffy to me–not so much finely-milled as it was airy, lightweight, and sparkly to the touch. (I was actually thinking “Aptly named snowflake…” while trying to sift out product.) The loose powder applied well to bare skin, blended out without much effort, and it seemed to adhere and stick well to my skin despite having higher sparkle content to it. The highlighter stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

MAC Kabuki Doll Eyeshadow x 9 Palette Review & Swatches

Kabuki Doll

MAC Kabuki Doll Eyeshadow x 9 Palette ($33.00 for 0.19 oz.) is a new, limited edition warm-toned neutral palette with a mix of mattes and shimmers. The mattes were pleasant to work with–soft, velvety, pigmented, and blendable–while the shimmers were more loosely-pressed (in general) and worked better with fingertips or a dampened brush for maximum coverage, more even application, and less fallout during application. If you typically apply your eyeshadow before base, use primer, or don’t mind using some of your shimmer shades with a wet brush, I imagine this will work well for you.

Dust Off

Dust Off is a pale white gold with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The texture was a little drier, almost flaky in the pan, but it adhered well to bare skin when pressed and patted on the lid. It lasted well for eight hours on me before it started to fade visibly.

Making Mauvey Moves

Making Mauvey Moves is a soft taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was opaque, while the consistency was soft, velvety to the touch, and just a smidgen dusty in the pan. The eyeshadow applied well to bare sin and blended out with little effort. It wore nicely for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Tokyo Drifter

Tokyo Drifter is a light-medium mauve with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The pigmentation was opaque in one layer and applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even application. The consistency was soft, a little bit emollient, but it applied well dry and didn’t require any change-up in technique to work well–it was just a bit creamier and smoother on my skin than a typical shimmer eyeshadow by MAC (that’s a good thing!). It stayed on well for eight hours before it started to show signs of wear.

Don’t Be Koi!

Don’t Be Koi! is a medium copper with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with a dampened brush or by using a fingertip. The texture was soft, more loosely-pressed in the pan, which made it prone to fallout during application, especially as I blended out the product with a dry brush. It lasted well for eight hours on me, and after the initial fallout, there was only a small, additional amount over time.

Spice Dynasty

Spice Dynasty is a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, velvety texture that almost felt lightly creamy to the touch. It applied beautifully to my skin and blended out easily along the edges without losing its intensity. It wore well for eight hours before I noticed any fading on my skin.

Bamboo-zled is a light-medium bronze with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t too dense nor too firmly pressed in the pan. The eyeshadow applied well to bare skin and blended out with little effort. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Fortune Kookie

Fortune Kookie is a soft brown with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The consistency was drier and dusty in the pan, which resulted in some fallout during application and a dusty appearance on my skin. Those with oilier lids may find the effect of the dryness less visible (or if using a tackier primer). It had good pigmentation but sheered out a bit in practice. It lasted well for seven hours on me before I noticed fading along the edges.

Kabuki Doll

Kabuki Doll is a medium-dark burgundy-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even application that diffused easily along the edges. The consistency was soft, velvety, and easy to work with. It wore well for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Kyoto Kitty

Kyoto Kitty is a medium, reddish-copper with warm undertones and flecks of copper and pink micro-glitter. It had semi-sheer pigmentation applied dry, and the only way to intensify it was to use it with a dampened brush. The texture was more loosely-pressed in the pan and felt drier, which resulted in the product sheering out and tons of fallout during application (even as I tried to be careful of it). It stayed on decently for seven hours but had additional fallout over time.

  • Haul/Rediscoveries: Anastasia spring launches, Charlotte Tilbury The Icon, Benefit Hoola Caramel/Toasted
  • Weekend plans: Gearing up for more chaos next week, and fingers crossed, there’ll be a reprieve by the close of next week…
  • Do you collect anything (that’s non-makeup!)?: I don’t actively collect anything these days! It’s actually a type of behavior I’ve consciously curbed over the years as I don’t think I’ve collected anything that’s really “of value” – just more materialistic, very short-lived joy.
