Best & Worst of Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Colors

Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color ($29.00 for 0.11 oz.) is supposed to have “high color payoff” with a “blotted-down stain effect” that “glides on comfortably” and keeps lips “hydrated.” It’s also supposed to be long-wearing and is buildable from “blotted-down” in one layer to “intense color payoff” in two to three layers. The majority of the shades in the range have medium to semi-opaque coverage in one layer, and they were buildable from there with two to three layers. A few shades applied less evenly than others, though most went on well enough.

The consistency was more like a firmer, harder balm, as it glided easily across my lips, but it didn’t feel wet, emollient, or oily, more waxy like a traditional lipstick but very lightweight. Some shades pulled into my lip lines and a few emphasized my natural lip texture, while others were more smoothing and flattering in finish/texture. The wear typically lasted between three and six hours with some of the richer/darker shades leaving subtle stains behind. The formula was more non-drying to lightly hydrating, but it wasn’t hydrating enough that I’d put it in that category (hydrating lipstick). They had a faint, lemon-meets-wax scent that sometimes wasn’t noticeable at all (depended on the shade).

ColourPop x Zoella Supernova Shadows Reviews & Swatches

Bellini

Colour Pop Bellini Supernova Shadow ($7.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a light-medium, rosy copper with subtle, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had rich color coverage that adhered evenly to bare skin applied with the included doe-foot applicator or with a separate brush (the latter was my preferred method to minimize cross-contamination). The texture was smooth, more mousse-like, which seemed to help the product go on more evenly and prevent it from sheering out too readily. It dried down and set to a transfer-proof result for a good 10 hours on me.

Formula Overview

$7.00/0.17 oz. – $41.18 Per Ounce

Per the brand, the formula is supposed to be a “super longwearing liquid shadow” that can be used as “an all over base color, a touch of glitter, or extreme metallic foil” with “high coverage” and “no fall out.” They were quite pigmented, and they sheered out a bit as liquid and cream products do as you diffuse the edges. The liquid eyeshadows applied better with an exterior applicator, whether synthetic brushes or fingertips (though I’d recommend swiping product onto a clean palette or brush rather than directly onto fingertips!). The wand applicator makes it hard to apply with precision and worked best for all-over, one-and-done application.

The formula felt watery and thin, and it spread out decently, but there was a lot of fine and larger shimmer/sparkle without a strong base color, so they tended to look better and more even in person as the shimmers reflected light. They dry down fast enough that I could diffuse and blend edges but not so slow that it pulled into my creases as it dried down. I found that they tended to breakdown from teary or watery eyes, as I always noticed gaps or missing pieces where I might water more (inner and outer corners) but did not have that issue elsewhere (like the lid).

I think the more glittery shades worked best as something layered on top of other products and not as much on their own unless used as liner–they seem to do okay as a thin line, likely due to the fact that it’s just a lot harder to see any imperfections when the line itself is thin. More metallic, less sparkly/glittery, shades seemed to work best alone (as they were quite pigmented, too, so they didn’t lend themselves well to layering).

I didn’t have much fallout over time but occasionally, there was a small chunk of product that dropped (rather than a few stray glitters). I also felt like the smoothest application was with fingertips as a brush seemed to make the product more likely to clump up or accentuate lid texture.

OG

Colour Pop OG Supernova Shadow ($7.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a light, golden copper with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had a chunkier texture as it dried down, which gave it a more uneven look on my skin, though it was incredibly reflective which masked a lot of its unevenness. The consistency was thin but airy–almost a little mousse-like–and applied with semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation. It stayed on well for eight hours before there was slight flaking.

Maybelline Pink for Me & Mauve for Me Color Sensational Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches

Pink for Me

Maybelline Pink for Me Color Sensational Made for All Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark, rosy mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a cream finish. It had a smooth, lightly creamy texture that had a touch of tackiness on my lips but always felt lightweight and comfortable. The color adhered evenly and stayed on for a solid five hours with a lightly hydrating formula.

Formula Overview

$7.49/0.15 oz. – $49.93 Per Ounce

The ColorSensational formula is supposed to have “crisp and vibrant color” with a “sensuous finish” that is “comfortable” to wear. The “Made for All” range is specially designed to be “universally flattering” across 50 skin tones for each shade in the line. Most of the shades had semi-opaque to opaque color coverage that went on evenly and didn’t settle into my lip lines. The consistency was lightweight, emollient without being slippery, and comfortable to wear, which ensured the color glided across my lips without tugging. The shades lasted for four to six hours on me with some of the deeper shades staining, while the formula felt lightly moisturizing. The matte finish has a more velvety feel and wasn’t hydrating. It had a sweet, caramel-like scent to my nose but no discernible taste.

Mauve for Me

Maybelline Mauve for Me Color Sensational Made for All Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a light-medium, rosy brown with warm undertones and a cream finish. At best, it was a very warm-toned plum, but it didn’t look mauve in the tube or applied to my eye. The texture was lightly creamy, smooth and comfortable to apply and to wear, though it seemed to emphasize my natural lip texture slightly–possibly a bit too clingy. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer that lasted well for four and a half hours on me. I found the formula to be lightly moisturizing over time.

ColourPop Swipe Right Pressed Powder Highlighter Review & Swatches

Swipe Right

Colour Pop Swipe Right Pressed Powder Highlighter ($8.00 for 0.23 oz.) is a soft, yellowed peach base with pink-to-violet shifting pearl. The texture was soft, smooth, and not too powdery nor too firmly presse din the pan, but it was a little on the thin side. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out without much effort. The sheen it gave was more lit-from-within than overtly shimmery, and it definitely didn’t emphasize my skin’s natural texture. I was able to catch the more lavender-like sheen at certain angles, too, and I think the yellow base will be more apparent on other skin tones as it blended in quite a bit with my natural coloring! This shade lasted nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably on me.

Formula Overview

$8.00/0.23 oz. – $34.78 Per Ounce

The powder highlighter is supposed to have a “high-shine” finish with “high colour intensity.” In general, ColourPop’s pressed highlighter powders have a smooth, moderately dense texture that was soft enough to be picked up easily by a brush but not kick up any powder in the pan. The formula was semi-opaque to opaque but easily sheered out for less shine and coverage if desired. There were a few shades within the range that emphasized my skin’s natural texture slightly but most did not. The wear ranged from seven and a half hours to nine hours.

What are your tips for staying on a no- or low-buy?

I’ve touched on my tips and tricks in longform with a recent post on curating a makeup collection you love, but I also have a guide to going on a low- or no-buy here.  At a high-level, these are three things that I think help to stick to a serious change in purchasing behavior:

1) Set specific goals and/or rules; the more specific you are, the less room you’ll have to wiggle out of what you’ve set up. It’s good to give yourself some “if this, then that” kind of rules–like “I can rollover this month’s budget to next month” instead of it being a “use it or lose it” policy (whatever works better!). Identifying WHY you’re changing your behavior helps in goal-setting and setting tangible goals like, “I want to boost my savings by 20%!” or “If I stay on my plan, I can take that vacation!” are very visible goals that are easy to check in with.

2.) Become a dupe-a-holic. Whether you use Temptalia’s Vanity system (very useful, if I do say so myself, if you tend to purchase from the brands I’ve reviewed, for making dupes handy) or methodically go through what you have and dupe what you saw and were tempted by, the key is having a sense that you most likely have something similar enough in your collection already.  If you don’t, then try layering and mixing products to get there.  Still don’t? Really drill yourself on why that’s absent from your stash–maybe you wouldn’t wear it often after all!

3.) If you break your no- or low-buy rules… don’t throw the whole plan away!  It’s a journey, and some people might experience more bumps than others.  Assess what you did, why you deviated from the plan, and how could you do things differently to be better at sticking to the plan in the future.

ColourPop x Zoella Crème Gel Liners Reviews & Swatches

Sincerely Yours

Colour Pop Sincerely Yours Crème Gel Liner ($5.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a dark brown with subtle, warmer reddish undertones and barely-there pearl. The pearl was fine and sparse to the point where I wasn’t sure that any of it translate to my lash line. The texture was firmer with light creaminess, enough that it wasn’t painful to apply, and adhered well to my water line without skipping or pushing product around. It didn’t smudge well as it was firmer and drier, so those who like to blur their liner might not like this one. It wore well for nine hours before starting thin noticeably on my lower lash line and seven hours on my waterline.

Ingredients

Dimethicone, Ceresin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Polyethylene, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Tin Oxide, Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Carmine (CI 75470), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

XOXO

Colour Pop XOXO Crème Gel Liner ($5.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a medium black with subtle, silver and teal pearl. The pearl was extremely subtle, as it didn’t look shimmery applied to my lash line and seemed more like a soft, matte black hue. The texture was just creamy enough to glide across my lash line without tugging, but it never felt waxy or emollient during application (so it set almost immediately and worked better for precision lining than those wanting to soften or smudge their liner). It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer that stayed on well for nine hours on my lower lash line (seven on my waterline).

Ingredients

Dimethicone, Ceresin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Polyethylene, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Silica, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).
